U.S. envoy Amiri discusses situation of Afghan women, girls with Albanian president

U.S. Special Envoy Rina Amiri expressed gratitude for Albania’s support of Afghan citizens, particularly women and girls, during her meetings with Albanian President Bajram Begaj and Igli Hasani, the country’s Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs.

Amiri highlighted Albania’s efforts in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), stating, “Expressed gratitude for the Albanian government’s vital work supporting the Afghan people and welcomed further collaboration to this end, particularly in support of Afghan women and girls.”

In an earlier X post, Amiri thanked Vjosa Osmani, President of the Republic of Kosova, for honoring Afghan women leaders who have done courageous and important work. However, she voiced concerns about the Taliban’s actions that prevented these women from attending an event in Kosova aimed at celebrating their achievements.

“There was collective dismay with the Taliban preventing women awardees from attending but resolve to continue using such platforms to stand with Afghan women,” Amiri wrote.

This recognition comes as the Taliban have, over the past two and a half years, increasingly imposed harsh restrictions on women and girls, severely limiting their access to education.
