A week earlier, Pakistan had deported 32,064 Afghans, while Iran expelled 9,020 during the same period.
“Those who have legal identity documents will certainly be registered,” Parsa said.
The closures are part of a government program to return more than 1.3 million Afghans holding Proof of Registration (PoR).
Some families later managed to bring the victims’ remains back into Afghanistan, the sources said.
They were admitted under a special program for Afghans who had worked with German institutions.
Authorities in Iran often describe undocumented Afghan migrants as “foreign nationals without permits.”
“The municipality can employ migrants, but it must be done according to the law,” Chamran said.
Some 30,000 Afghan students, along with their families, were expelled from Khorasan Razavi.
Pakistan expelled 6,187 people through the Torkham, Spin Boldak and Bahramcha border crossings.
