Taliban allocates additional funds for district-level development

The Taliban-run Ministry of Finance announced on Wednesday that it has allocated an additional 5 million Afghanis (over $70,000) to the development budget for each district in the current fiscal year, aimed at supporting reconstruction efforts.

According to the ministry, the funds will be used for projects in various sectors within each district, in coordination with the Taliban’s local departments.

Some projects have already been completed, and others are expected to be finished by the end of the fiscal year, the ministry said.

However, the Taliban has yet to disclose the annual budget amounts or their sources of income. The lack of development projects and a coherent economic strategy are believed to be primary causes of ongoing poverty and high unemployment rates since the Taliban’s return to power.

The United Nations has previously estimated that the country’s population of 26 million is in need of humanitarian assistance.
