The Salang Pass has reopened to passenger vehicles after being closed overnight due to heavy snowfall, strong winds and poor visibility, the Taliban-run Ministry of Public Works said on Thursday.

The key mountain route, which links northern provinces with Kabul and central Afghanistan, was shut around midnight on Monday as weather conditions deteriorated.

Taliban spokesman for the ministry, Mohammad Ashraf Haqshenas, said in a statement posted on X that one traffic lane has now been cleared, allowing vehicles stranded on both sides of the pass to resume travel.

He said snow clearance operations were continuing and that the route would be fully reopened to all traffic by the end of Thursday if weather conditions improve.

The Salang Pass is a vital transport corridor for passengers and trade, and frequent winter closures often disrupt travel and supply chains across the country.
