Taliban publicly flogged a man in northern Balkh province on Thursday on charges of selling methamphetamine and alcohol, according to a statement from the Taliban-run Supreme Court.

The man received 39 lashes at a sports stadium in Mazar-e-Sharif City.

Despite widespread criticism from the United Nations and international human rights organizations, the Taliban continue to carry out physical punishments.

Amnesty International said Thursday that the Taliban has been committing crimes in Afghanistan with “absolute impunity” under international law.

The report, released on the third anniversary of the fall of the Afghan republic and the Taliban’s return to power, criticized the global community and the United Nations for failing to address what it called a “humanitarian catastrophe” in Afghanistan.

According to findings by Amu TV, over the past three years of Taliban rule, more than 600 individuals, including over 100 women, have been publicly flogged across the country.
