Argentina thrashes New Zealand 5-0 in U-20 World Cup group play

Argentina continued their domination of Group A with a 5-0 defeat of New Zealand on Friday at the Under-20 World Cup.

The host nation entered their final Group A match having already clinched a trip to the round of 16 and made easy work of New Zealand with three first-half goals from Ignacio Maestro Puch, Gino Infantino, and Luka Romero.

Argentina didn’t let up in the second half, with Brian Aguirre scoring with a penalty kick for a 4-0 advantage before Alejo Veliz finished the scoring with a late strike and a 5-0 win.

After Lionel Messi led their men’s team to a stunning World Cup win last year, Argentina’s Under-20 team will look to continue that form when they take on the second-placed team from Group C in their first knockout match on May 31.
