Residents of the southern province of Helmand have voiced concern over the deteriorating condition of the historic Bost Fortress, warning that the ancient site is at risk of further damage without urgent restoration and protection.
Bost Fortress, one of Helmand’s most significant archaeological landmarks, is believed by historians to date back between 3,000 and 5,000 years. The site, long a destination for domestic visitors, has suffered from erosion and neglect in recent years.
Visitors and local residents say parts of the structure are steadily crumbling and fear that large sections could be lost if no action is taken.
“If this fortress is not protected, important parts of it will soon be destroyed,” said Jamal, a visitor to the site. “It is an important historical heritage and must be preserved.”
Local residents echoed those concerns, urging authorities to take concrete steps to safeguard the monument.
“This fortress is being destroyed day by day,” said Shah Mahmood, a resident of Helmand. “If there is no attention, it will disappear completely. This is our historical asset.”
Images of Bost Fortress once appeared on Afghanistan’s 100-afghani banknote. Limited restoration work was launched during the previous government but was left unfinished, and there has been no visible progress since.
Residents say they hope efforts will resume to prevent further damage to one of the country’s most important historical sites.
