Former President Hamid Karzai urged investors, charities and international aid groups to support families affected by the powerful earthquake in eastern Afghanistan, which has now killed at least 800 people.
The Taliban’s chief spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said Monday that all of the deaths were in Kunar province, where more than 2,500 others were also injured. In neighboring Nangarhar province, officials said 12 people were killed and 255 wounded.
Taliban said the quake also damaged at least four homes in Panjshir province. They warned that the toll could rise further, with many people still trapped under rubble.
The earthquake struck shortly after midnight Sunday near Asadabad in Kunar province with a magnitude of 6.0 and a depth of about 27 kilometers (17 miles) near Jalalabad, according to preliminary reports.
