FAIZABAD, Afghanistan — The 60-bed maternity hospital in the city of Faizabad, the center of the north-eastern province of Badakhshan, has suspended its operations due to long-term unpaid salaries, sources told Amu on Monday.

The World Health Organization (WHO), which had been funding the salaries of the hospital’s staff, has not disbursed payments for several months, leading to the shutdown, sources from the province added.

“The medical staff have gradually stopped coming to the hospital,” the source said.

The hospital employs over 70 medical professionals, including doctors and nurses.

Badakhshan, one of Afghanistan’s most rural provinces, often struggles with inadequate access to healthcare services.

The closure of this maternity hospital leaves only a 30-bed maternity unit operational within the provincial hospital.

This further strains the already limited healthcare resources available to the local population.
