Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), Afghanistan’s national power distributor, has inked a deal with Tajikistan to purchase electricity for 2024.
The agreement was finalized during a meeting in Turkey with Mohammad Omar Asazada, Chairman of Tajikistan’s Electricity Company, as stated by DABS.
The two sides also discussed on the potential extension of a new 500 KV transmission line from Tajikistan to Afghanistan. Tajikistan has shown interest in this project expansion, DABS said.
Additionally, DABS leadership sought Tajikistan’s assistance in restarting and coordinating the CASA-1000 project.
CASA-1000 is an ambitious renewable energy infrastructure construction project that will bring 1,300 megawatts of surplus electricity from Central Asia to high-demand electricity markets in South Asia through new energy infrastructure.
This $1.16 billion Central Asia-South Asia power project aims to export surplus hydroelectricity from Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Afghanistan currently relies on importing over 670 MW of electricity from its neighbors Iran, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.
