At least five people have been killed in floods, severe storms and landslides that struck several provinces across Afghanistan over the past 48 hours, Taliban disaster management authority, the ANDMA, said on Saturday.
It added that the extreme weather affected Kabul, Zabul, Kandahar, Samangan, Takhar, Nangarhar, Laghman and Kunar provinces.
According to ANDMA, the disasters partially damaged 30 homes and 15 shops, while destroying 86 kilometers (53 miles) of roads, a water supply network and a bridge.
The severe weather also killed about 300 livestock and destroyed large areas of agricultural land, it said.
The ANDMA said damage assessments were continuing and that emergency assistance was being provided to affected communities.
Afghanistan is highly vulnerable to natural disasters, including flash floods, landslides and droughts. Extreme weather events have become more frequent in recent years, with aid agencies warning that climate change is increasing the country’s exposure to natural hazards while compounding humanitarian challenges.
