Ex-MP from Afghanistan wounded in Iran shooting

Karimuddin Rezazada, a former MP from Ghor province, was wounded in a shooting in the Iranian city of Karaj on Tuesday, people familiar with the incident said.

Unidentified gunmen opened fire on Rezazada while riding a motorcycle and fled the scene, the sources said.

The attack occurred on Tuesday, Feb. 24. Two bullets struck Mr. Rezazada, and his condition was described as serious, sources said, adding that he is being treated at a hospital in Iran.

Iranian authorities have not publicly commented on the shooting.

The attack prompted a response from Ata Mohammad Noor, the former governor of Balkh province, who called on the Taliban to abandon what he described as a path of “violence, crime and bloodshed.”

Although Noor did not directly accuse the Taliban of carrying out the attack, he issued a pointed warning.

“Do not invite or force us into war, struggle and bloodshed,” he wrote on X, addressing the Taliban. “Distance yourselves from violence and do not push the country further toward confrontation and crisis. Afghanistan needs reason, restraint and an end to bloodshed more than ever.”

The shooting comes amid concerns among Afghanistan’s political figures living abroad.

Previously, Gen. Akramuddin Saree, a former anti-Taliban commander under the previous government, was killed in an armed attack in Iran.

Taliban have not commented on the attack on Rezazada.
