GENEVA — The European Union has called for the full and equal enjoyment of human rights for Afghan women and girls, urging their empowerment, participation, and leadership in all areas of society while condemning the Taliban’s systematic oppression.
Speaking at the 92nd Standing Committee of the UNHCR in Geneva, the EU and its member states reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Afghan refugees and displaced persons.
“We condemn the systemic, deliberate, and systematic character of the Taliban’s oppression of women, girls, and marginalized groups,” the EU said in its statement.
The EU highlighted its humanitarian funding to UNHCR, supporting Afghan refugees both inside the country and in neighboring nations, particularly Iran and Pakistan. It praised the agency’s efforts in providing lifesaving aid, legal documentation, and resilience-building programs for Afghan returnees while urging a continued inclusive humanitarian response.
The EU also stressed the need for ongoing assessments of Afghanistan’s evolving security situation, particularly concerning the risks faced by returning refugees.
While acknowledging the “generosity” of Pakistan and Iran in hosting millions of displaced Afghans, the EU expressed concern over the deportation of undocumented refugees.
“The principle of non-refoulement must be upheld,” the EU stated, referring to the international legal obligation prohibiting the forced return of individuals to countries where they may face persecution.
It encouraged UNHCR to continue advocating against deportations and to ensure that Afghans have access to legal protection and stability in their host countries.
Beyond Afghanistan, the EU also addressed the worsening crisis in Myanmar and the plight of Rohingya refugees, urging stronger international efforts to protect civilians and uphold humanitarian law. It also reaffirmed its opposition to the reported deportation of Uyghurs, emphasizing that the principle of non-refoulement must be respected in all circumstances.
