KABUL — The United Nations has urged the Taliban to lift its ban on girls’ secondary education, which has now entered its third year, calling the restriction a violation of fundamental rights.
“This violation must end,” the U.N. humanitarian agency wrote in a post on X on Sunday.
Since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021, 1.5 million teenage girls have been barred from attending school beyond sixth grade, according to the U.N. The Taliban have also banned women from universities, further restricting their access to education.
Beyond the education ban, the Taliban have imposed sweeping restrictions on women’s rights, curbing freedom of speech, freedom of movement, and employment opportunities, drawing widespread international condemnation.
