Sweden contributes $9 million to UN trust fund for Afghanistan

UNITED NATIONS — Sweden has donated $9 million (100 million Swedish kronor) to the United Nations-managed trust fund for Afghanistan, the fund announced on Friday.

The contribution, provided by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, aims to strengthen Afghan communities by enhancing resilience, fostering hope, and delivering sustainable solutions amid the country’s ongoing crisis, the fund said in a statement on the social media platform X.

The trust fund described the donation as “vital support” during challenging times.

Dire humanitarian needs

The donation comes as Afghanistan faces an acute humanitarian crisis. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), 23.7 million people—more than half the population—require urgent humanitarian assistance.

As winter sets in, many Afghans report severe hardships, including inadequate shelter, heating, and food supplies to survive the harsh conditions.

Aid organizations warn that without sustained international support, the situation could deteriorate further, leaving millions at risk.
