BRICS nations urge Taliban to lift educational bans on women, girls

In a joint statement issued at a summit in Kazan, Russia, BRICS member countries called for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing crisis in Afghanistan, urging the Taliban to lift their bans on education for women and girls.

The statement reflects growing global concern over Afghanistan’s security and human rights situation.

The BRICS nations emphasized the need for the Taliban to respect human rights and protect the basic rights of all Afghan citizens, including women, girls, and ethnic minorities. They also stressed that the Taliban must take “visible and concrete” steps to prevent Afghanistan from being used as a base for terrorist activities.

The joint statement expressed support for an Afghanistan that is free of terrorist groups, independent, and unified. It called on the Taliban to take “immediate and tangible actions” toward achieving these goals.

The BRICS countries also highlighted the importance of regional meetings involving Afghanistan’s neighboring countries, praising their efforts to facilitate the peace process. The statement underscored the belief that the participation of neighboring states is essential to ensuring security and stability in the region.

The three-day BRICS summit, which began on Tuesday, took place without Taliban representation. Leaders from China, India, Russia, Turkey, South Africa, Brazil, Iran, Egypt, and Ethiopia, along with the UN Secretary-General, attended the event. Although the Taliban had requested to participate, their request was denied by BRICS members.
