The Taliban-run Ministry of Finance has signed a $113.3 million contract with a private company to install security scanners at 12 customs ports across Afghanistan.
Ahmad Zia Khalid, a Taliban official with the General Directorate of Administrative Affairs, stated that the installation of the scanners aims to enhance security. He also noted that the project is expected to be completed within the next two years.
This development comes amid complaints from traders about high customs tariffs imposed by the Taliban on imported goods. Traders have also cited restrictions on transferring money abroad as a significant issue.
Since the Taliban seized power in August 2021, the international community has imposed severe economic sanctions on financial institutions run by Taliban officials, many of whom are blacklisted by the United States.
