At least six people were killed and seven others injured after the roofs of three homes collapsed in the eastern province of Nangarhar, local Taliban officials said on Monday, as extreme weather continues to batter the country.
The incidents occurred in Nangarhar, where residential houses collapsed in the districts of Pachiragam, Khogyani and Spin Ghar, according to a statement from the Taliban governor’s media office.
Most of the victims were children, the statement said.
The collapses come amid weeks of heavy rainfall and widespread flooding that have affected more than 20 provinces across Afghanistan, from Kabul to southern, western, northern and eastern regions.
According to the Taliban’s National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA), at least 99 people have been killed and more than 154 injured in recent floods and related natural disasters since late March. Nearly 6,000 families have been affected, and more than 3,600 homes have been destroyed.
On Saturday alone, ANDMA reported 11 deaths and 11 injuries across multiple provinces, including Kabul, Parwan, Daikundi, Kapisa, Paktia, Paktika, Maidan Wardak, Ghazni, Zabul, Uruzgan, Kandahar, Herat, Badghis, Ghor, Nimroz, Samangan, Takhar, Badakhshan, Nangarhar, Laghman and Kunar.
The wave of severe weather has also destroyed roughly 11,700 jeribs of agricultural land and damaged at least 337 kilometers of roads, further straining already fragile infrastructure and livelihoods.
Residents in affected areas have described mounting losses, with many families losing homes, crops and income sources.
Afghanistan is particularly vulnerable to seasonal flooding, especially in the spring, when heavy rains and snowmelt can trigger landslides and structural collapses in poorly constructed housing.
