The Afghanistan Cricket Board is expected to remove Rashid Khan as captain of the national team, with Ibrahim Zadran likely to replace him only in T20 format, sources told Amu TV on Thursday.

The sources said the board’s decision is linked to what they described as “personal issues,” though no further details were provided. Officials from the cricket board have not publicly confirmed the change.

Rashid, one of Afghanistan’s most prominent cricketers and among the world’s leading T20 bowlers, has led the national side in multiple formats in recent years. He was appointed captain of Afghanistan’s T20 team in 2019 and later resumed leadership duties after periods of transition within the squad.

Sources said the board had previously considered removing him from the captaincy ahead of the T20 World Cup but did not proceed at the time.

Ibrahim Zadran, a top-order batsman who has become a mainstay of Afghanistan’s batting lineup in recent years, is now expected to assume the role. Zadran has been regarded as one of the team’s most consistent performers in international competitions.

Sources also said that Zadran has not accepted the offer to lead the national team in T20 format only.

Rashid has played a central role in Afghanistan’s rise in international cricket, representing the country in major tournaments and franchise leagues around the world. Any leadership change would mark a significant shift for a team that has relied heavily on his experience both on and off the field.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board has not issued an official statement regarding the reported move.
