Salang Pass closed due to heavy snow and storms

The Salang Pass, a key route connecting Kabul with northern provinces, was closed to all traffic early on Wednesday due to heavy snowfall, poor visibility and strong winds, the Taliban-run Ministry of Public Works said.

The ministry said the closure took effect at 5:20 a.m. local time and was temporary, adding that efforts were under way to reopen the route once weather conditions improve.

In a statement, the ministry urged travellers not to head towards the Salang area until further notice, warning that snowfall and storms were expected to continue through Thursday.

The Salang Pass is a strategic highway linking nine northern provinces to Kabul and other parts of the country, and its closure often disrupts travel and trade.

Residents have long complained that repeated closures of the pass during winter create serious difficulties, calling for long-term solutions to prevent disruptions caused by snow and storms.
