Japan has provided $240,000 in new humanitarian funding to support health services in Afghanistan, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Monday.
The WHO’s Afghanistan office said the funding reflected Japan’s continued commitment to life-saving humanitarian efforts in the country, where the health system remains under severe strain due to chronic shortages of resources.
The funds will be used to help sustain essential health services, particularly for vulnerable populations, the WHO said, without giving further details on how the money would be allocated.
Afghanistan has faced a deep humanitarian crisis since the Taliban returned to power in 2021, with international agencies repeatedly warning that funding shortfalls threaten the operation of health facilities and access to medical care for millions of people.
