As the deportations continue, at least 607 individuals returned to Afghanistan on Monday, Dec. 29, according to figures by the Taliban’s commission for refugees.

The commission said a further 83 individuals were deported from Iran over the same period, adding that most of the returns were forced.

According to the commission, the returnees entered Afghanistan through the Torkham, Spin Boldak, Islam Qala and Silk Bridge border crossings. Pakistan had deported 2,628 individuals the previous day.

Afghanistan has seen a sharp rise in returns as Pakistan and Iran continue to expel undocumented migrants, forcing large numbers of Afghan nationals to leave.

The United Nations Development Program has said more than 2.8 million migrants returned to the country in 2025 alone, mostly from Iran and Pakistan, placing additional strain on an economy already weakened by decades of conflict, economic crisis and recent natural disasters.

The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) has warned that many returnees arrive with little or no savings, shelter or job prospects, increasing the risk of deeper poverty and social instability in Afghanistan.
