Afghan martial artist Fayaz Ahmad Ebrahimi won a bronze medal in the 75-kilogram weight category at the Asian Youth Games, the national Olympic committee confirmed Thursday.
Ebrahimi secured third place after defeating competitors from Kyrgyzstan and India. He is now set to compete on Friday for a chance to upgrade his bronze to a silver medal.
In a separate match, Afghan athlete Ahmad Qayoumi also defeated his Indian opponent and will vie for a bronze medal later in the tournament.
The Asian Youth Games, hosted in Bahrain, feature athletes from 45 countries competing in 27 sports. Afghanistan has sent nearly 50 athletes to participate in eight disciplines.
The tournament began on Oct. 22 and will continue through Oct. 31.
