After Israel‑Hamas swap, world leaders sign Gaza ceasefire framework

World leaders gathered Monday in Egypt following a prisoner exchange between Israel and Hamas, signing a framework they said will guide ceasefire implementation and peace efforts in Gaza.

President Trump, arriving from Israel, joined Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al‑Sisi, and leaders from Qatar and Turkey in endorsing the agreement in Sharm el‑Sheikh, with Trump calling it a document “going to spell out rules and regulations” for the ceasefire.

Earlier, Hamas and Israel carried out a large prisoner swap: Hamas released 20 Israeli captives held in Gaza, and Israel freed nearly 2,000 Palestinians from its prisons.

The summit comes amid grim figures from the conflict: according to Gaza’s health authorities, more than 67,800 people have been killed and over 170,000 wounded in Gaza since October 2023. In Israel, initial reports place casualty figures from the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks at 1,139 and about 200 taken hostage.

Trump departed Egypt aboard Air Force One, telling gathered officials the day marked a “tremendous day for the Middle East.”

Egypt’s al‑Sisi described the Gaza deal as opening “a new era of peace and stability” and said it could pave the way for a two‑state solution for Israelis and Palestinians.
