Heavy rains triggered flash floods Thursday morning in eastern Afghanistan, blocking two major highways and leaving hundreds of vehicles and passengers stranded, local sources said.
In Nangarhar province, floods struck Kuz Kunar district’s Shage area, forcing the closure of the Kunar–Jalalabad highway. Dozens of vehicles, including passenger buses and ambulances, were stuck on both sides of the road, residents said.
Meanwhile, flooding in Sorkh Rod district damaged a bridge in Jalalabad’s Seventh District, cutting off the Kabul–Jalalabad highway. The closure stranded hundreds of vehicles and passengers along the route, according to local reports.
Both highways are vital arteries in eastern Afghanistan, connecting Jalalabad with the capital, Kabul, and neighboring Kunar province. Residents warned that the closures could delay urgent medical transfers and disrupt the delivery of goods.
There were no immediate reports of casualties.
