Iran’s minister of industry, mines and trade, Mohammad Atabak, is scheduled to visit Afghanistan for talks with Taliban officials, Iranian media reported Monday.

The trip is part of a series of recent meetings between Taliban and Iranian authorities and will focus on opportunities for exploration and extraction of Afghanistan’s mineral resources, the reports said.

Atabak is expected to meet Taliban officials in the western city of Herat and review natural resource projects and infrastructure in the province, which borders eastern Iran.

In previous meetings, Taliban officials asked Iran to provide technical expertise and experience in mining exploration and development.

Herat is considered a key hub for cross-border trade and economic ties between the two countries.
