Addressing an event in Kabul on August 15, the fourth year of Taliban’s return to power, Taliban Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani said Friday that they remain committed to their obligations under the 2020 Doha Agreement and that Afghanistan will not pose a threat to any country.
The event was held at the Loya Jirga Hall in Kabul.
“We are not a threat to others, and we do not want others to be a threat to us,” Haqqani said, referring to security threats from Afghanistan to other countries.
He rejected remarks by some countries that Afghanistan has become a hub for terrorist groups, saying such accusations stem from “their own internal problems.”
Haqqani said the Taliban would not tolerate insecurity and urged those he described as “opponents seeking to create instability” to stop their activities.
One key part of the Doha agreement was the Taliban’s pledge to cut ties with terrorist groups. Pakistan has repeatedly voiced concern over the presence of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan on Afghan soil. Russia and other regional countries have also expressed alarm about ISIS and other extremist organizations in Afghanistan.
The UN monitoring team said in its latest report that the Taliban has provided “safe operating environment” for terrorist groups.
