As the deportation of Afghan migrants continues, Iran expelled 5,107 individuals on Monday, Aug. 11, almost the same as the day before, the Taliban-run Commission for Refugees said Tuesday.
The commission said the migrants returned to the country through the Islam Qala crossing in Herat province and the Pul-e Abrisham crossing in Nimroz province.
At the same time, according to the Taliban commission, Pakistan expelled 701 Afghans — both voluntarily and forcibly — through the Torkham and Spin Boldak border crossings.
Figures reviewed by Amu from the Taliban commission’s data show that 55,038 Afghans were expelled from Iran in just one week, between Aug. 1 and Aug. 7.
At a recent annual reporting meeting in Kabul, Taliban-run Ministry of Refugees officials said that in the past three months — April, May and June — 1.8 million Afghans have been deported from Iran.
Meanwhile, the UN refugee agency in Afghanistan reported recently that nearly 1.2 million Afghans returned from Pakistan between Sept. 15, 2023, and June 30, 2024.
Despite international calls for restraint, both Iran and Pakistan have intensified deportations of Afghan migrants. Some returnees have told Amu they faced “beatings, confiscation of property, inhumane treatment and humiliation” during their forced return.
