Figures by the Taliban’s commission on migration indicate that Iran deported 3,467 Afghan migrants on Saturday, August 2, a sharp drop from the more than 10,000 who were being expelled daily over the past week.
The commission said Pakistan also expelled or facilitated the return of 475 Afghans during the same 24-hour period, through a mix of voluntary and forced repatriations. Migrants entered Afghanistan via the Islam Qala, Pul-e-Abrisham, Torkham and Spin Boldak border crossings, it said.
Data reviewed by Amu showed that between July 25 and Aug. 1, more than 85,000 Afghans were expelled from Iran — averaging over 10,000 people a day — and more than 3,100 were deported or returned from Pakistan.
Figures by the Taliban-run statistics authority show that in the past three months alone, 1.8 million Afghans had been expelled from Iran. Meanwhile, the U.N. refugee agency reported that between Sept. 15, 2023, and June 30, 2024, nearly 1.2 million Afghans returned from Pakistan.
Despite calls from rights groups to halt the expulsions, both Iran and Pakistan have continued mass deportations. Some returnees said they faced beatings, confiscation of belongings and other mistreatment during forced returns.
