AL-AHSA, Saudi Arabia — Afghanistan’s national football team suffered a 1-0 defeat to Syria on Tuesday in the second match of its qualifying campaign for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.
The game, technically hosted by Afghanistan, was held in the Saudi Arabian city of Al-Ahsa due to security concerns that prevent the team from playing at home.
The loss follows Afghanistan’s earlier 2-0 defeat to Tajikistan in the opening round of qualifiers.
Afghanistan is scheduled to face regional rival Pakistan later in the qualifying stage, as the team looks to recover from a difficult start in Group E.
