BERLIN — Former President Hamid Karzai condemned an attack in Munich, Germany, in which a 24-year-old Afghan asylum seeker drove his car into a crowd of protesters, injuring at least 28 people, according to reports.

In a statement on X on Friday, Karzai expressed sympathy for the victims and gratitude for Germany’s support of Afghanistan.

“My condolences go to the families of the victims,” he wrote. “I wish the people of Germany lasting happiness and good health and appreciate their steadfast support for Afghanistan.”

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz denounced the attack, saying the suspect should not expect leniency and would face prosecution and deportation.

The attack, which took place just ahead of the Munich Security Conference, has heightened concerns over migration policies in Germany.

Authorities said the suspect was arrested at the scene after driving into the crowd. Following the incident, Scholz announced plans to accelerate the deportation of migrants, including those from Afghanistan.
