Pakistan, China and Russia hold informal talks on Afghanistan in Doha

Special envoys from Pakistan, China and Russia held an informal meeting in Doha on Monday to discuss regional coordination on Afghanistan, said Mohammad Sadiq, Pakistan’s special representative for Afghanistan.

In a post on X, Sadiq described the meeting it as “an important informal discussion” with his counterparts and ambassadors from China and Russia.

According to Sadiq, the talks focused on enhancing regional cooperation and reaffirming a shared commitment to greater collaboration on issues related to Afghanistan.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of ongoing Doha Process working group sessions hosted by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). These include the third meeting on counter-narcotics and the second on private sector development.

While the formal agenda has centered on economic cooperation and drug control, critics have expressed concern that the focus of such talks largely reflects the Taliban’s priorities, with limited attention paid to governance, human rights and political inclusion.

Some Afghan and international observers have cautioned against engaging with the Taliban in ways that might legitimize their administration without addressing widespread concerns over repression, particularly of women and civil society.
