The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced that the United Kingdom has pledged £6 million to the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund (AHF) for the 2024-2025 period.
In a post on X, OCHA noted that the U.K. has been a key donor to the fund, contributing over £304 million since its inception in 2014. “As the largest multi-year and regular donor to the Fund, the U.K. has consistently provided support since 2014,” the agency said.
The contribution comes as Afghanistan faces urgent humanitarian needs, particularly with winter approaching. OCHA has appealed for more than $600 million to address critical “winter preparedness” efforts. The agency identified 171 districts as high-priority areas and 277 as medium-priority regions in need of assistance.
According to OCHA, $104 million is needed immediately to pre-position essential supplies before the harsh winter sets in, to ensure aid reaches vulnerable populations in remote regions. The United Nations has warned that nearly 24 million people in Afghanistan are in need of humanitarian assistance, underscoring the severity of the crisis.
The U.K.’s financial support aims to bolster ongoing efforts to provide life-saving aid to those affected by the country’s deepening humanitarian crisis.
