Over 130 athletes from Afghanistan are taking part in the upcoming Asian Games; every one of whom is male.
Afghanistan’s national men’s volleyball team left Kabul on Thursday for China to attend the Asian Games scheduled to start next week.
Before their departure, the team met with Ahmadullah Wasiq, the Taliban’s director general of physical education and sports.
The Afghanistan National Volleyball team is in Group F and will play against Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines.
A 15-day training camp was held for the team in order to better prepare them for the competition, according to Wasiq.
The Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games is set to start on September 23 in China.
On behalf of Afghanistan, 133 athletes, including 17 from the volleyball team, are attending the games – all of whom are men as the Taliban has banned women from playing sports.
