Bangladesh’s assistant coach says his team will benefit in the long term from facing Afghanistan’s daunting spin attack in the current three-match ODI series.
Speaking to journalists in Chittagong, in Bangladesh on Monday, Nic Pothas said: “They have the best spin attack in the world – that’s just a fact.”
Afghanistan won the first two ODIs to clinch the series but will face Bangladesh, also known as the Tigers, in the final ODI on Tuesday. Afghanistan became only the second team to win an ODI series in Bangladesh in the past seven years, the other being world champions England.
The national team’s spinners Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi contributed heavily to the wins in the first two matches, sharing 11 wickets among them.
“No other team in the world has three spinners of this quality that keep coming at you all the time,” said Pothas.
“It will make us better. If you can face this level of spin, you can face anybody,” he said.
Afghanistan’s bowling coach Hamid Hassan also praised left-arm pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi, who earned crucial breakthroughs in both matches and picked up six wickets.
“Hopefully in the Asia Cup, and we’re targeting the World Cup [in October], he’ll be our man and the key bowler,” said Hassan.
Afghanistan will still play two T20s in Bangladesh’s northeastern city of Sylhet on July 14 and 16.
