Spain rescues 38 migrants off Canary Islands

A Spanish coast guard vessel brought 38 migrants to the port of Arguineguin in Gran Canaria on Saturday after intercepting them in a wooden boat carrying them in the Atlantic Ocean.

The migrants of African origin included at least 10 minors and they were picked up 6 miles off Gran Canaria island, authorities said.

Overall, 8,140 reached Spain by sea including the Canary Islands off the African coast, a 27% decrease from 2022.

According to Spain’s Walking Borders charity, 2,390 people lost their lives trying to reach Spain primarily by sea in 2022.
