Afghanistan: Four dead as rainfall, floods hit Nangarhar

At least four people died and 25 others were injured in overnight floods caused by heavy rain in the eastern province of Nangarhar, local Taliban officials and residents said on Friday.

Four children died when the roof of a house collapsed in Kama district on Thursday night. Six people were wounded in the area, according to local residents.

The floods damaged dozens of houses and hundreds of acres of farmland in various parts of the province.

“Unfortunately, four of our countrymen have been martyred and 25 more have been injured. Based on our preliminary report, at least 400 families have been affected by natural disasters,” said Idris Sapai, a manager at the natural disaster management authority’s office in Nangarhar.

“It was 1:30 am when a strong wind started along with rain and then floods started 20 minutes after that. It martyred four children. One is missing,” said Rohullah, a resident of Nangarhar.

The residents said that 19 other people were injured in other districts of Nangarhar.

“There are different crops on these fields. All have been damaged,” said Sahib ul-Haq, a resident of Nangarhar.

“The farming fields were already damaged by rain. The rest was destroyed by floods,” said a Nangarhar resident.

UN officials have said that climate change and the economic downturn continue to fuel the crisis in Afghanistan. The United Nations has said that the humanitarian situation is worsening in Afghanistan and over 28 million people are in need of aid while six million are on the verge of famine.
