In a statement on the International Day of Women in Diplomacy, the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) on Wednesday underscored the importance of Afghan women’s participation in diplomacy, public life and decision-making.
UNAMA said Afghan women play a vital role in strengthening international cooperation, advancing peace efforts and promoting inclusive decision-making.
The UN mission emphasized that the meaningful participation and voices of Afghan women in public life and decision-making processes are essential for achieving sustainable peace, inclusive development and a more stable future.
“Women’s full, equal and meaningful participation is not only a fundamental right but also a prerequisite for building stronger, more resilient and peaceful societies,” UNAMA said.
The statement comes as Afghan women remain largely excluded from political power and formal decision-making structures under the Taliban rule.
Since returning to power in August 2021, the Taliban have imposed sweeping restrictions on women and girls, barring them from secondary and higher education, limiting employment opportunities and restricting their participation in public life.
The United Nations has repeatedly warned that the restrictions have no parallel globally and have significantly curtailed the rights and freedoms of Afghan women and girls.
Despite these challenges, UNAMA said Afghan women continue to contribute to their communities and play an important role in efforts aimed at peacebuilding, development and international engagement.
The International Day of Women in Diplomacy, observed annually on June 24, was established by the United Nations General Assembly to recognize the contributions of women to diplomacy and to promote their equal participation in foreign policy and international affairs.
