Six Afghan nationals were killed and three others injured in a traffic accident in Iran’s Semnan province, Iranian media reported on Friday.

According to the state-run news agency, IRNA, a Peugeot 405 collided with a cargo truck on the road between Eyvanekey and Tehran.

Karen Yahyaei, director of public relations at Semnan University of Medical Sciences, said the crash occurred at 8:17 p.m. local time.

“Of the nine people involved in the accident, six died at the scene and three others were transferred to medical centers by emergency responders,” Yahyaei said.

He added that most of the victims were women and children.

Iranian authorities have not released the identities of the victims or provided further details about the cause of the crash.

Iran hosts one of the world’s largest Afghan migrant populations, including refugees, labor migrants and undocumented residents. Afghan nationals are frequently among those affected by traffic accidents, workplace incidents and other emergencies in the country.
