Afghanistan wins Rustami title as martial arts tournament ends in Kabul

Organizers said 60 of the participants were foreign competitors.

A regional tournament featuring traditional martial arts concluded in Kabul on Saturday, with Afghanistan’s athletes winning the top title in the Rustami wrestling category.

The competition, which began last Thursday, brought together about 160 athletes from seven countries, including Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Iran and Turkey. Organizers said 60 of the participants were foreign competitors, alongside 100 Afghan athletes.

Competitors took part in several disciplines, including kurash, Rustami wrestling and other traditional grappling styles, across multiple weight classes.

Afghanistan secured first place in Rustami wrestling, followed by Uzbekistan in second and Tajikistan in third, according to organizers. Medals, certificates and cash prizes were awarded to top performers at the closing ceremony.

The Taliban-run sports directorate has not provided details on achievements by other teams in the tournament.

The event is held at a time that Taliban have banned women from all types of sports.
