Floods across Afghanistan kill 17, damage homes

Floods in Samangan province, northern Afghanistan. March 2026.

Heavy rains and flooding across Afghanistan have killed at least 17 people and injured 26 others over the past 24 hours, the Taliban-run disaster management agency said, as severe weather swept through multiple provinces.

The agency said the floods affected at least 13 provinces, including Parwan, Daikundi, Logar, Wardak, Farah, Herat, Ghor, Samangan, Faryab, Jawzjan, Badghis, Laghman and Sar-e Pul.

The agency said 37 homes were completely destroyed and 10 shops were damaged. About 80 kilometers of roads and 140 acres of agricultural land were also affected.

In total, around 500 families were impacted by the flooding, with some receiving assistance, the agency said.

It warned that rainfall was expected to continue, raising the risk of further damage.

In Kabul, heavy rains in recent days have caused localized flooding, submerging parts of roads and disrupting traffic in some areas.

Afghanistan is highly vulnerable to extreme weather, with floods and droughts frequently causing casualties and economic losses, particularly in rural areas with limited infrastructure.
