At least 14 migrants died after a boat carrying undocumented migrants capsized off the coast of southern Turkey, Turkish authorities said on Monday.

The incident occurred Monday morning near the coastal district of Demre in Antalya province, where the boat was spotted by authorities, according to officials.

Passengers aboard the vessel were migrants from Afghanistan, including women and children, officials said.

According to a statement from local authorities, Turkish coast guard units attempted to stop the boat. The vessel reportedly made sharp maneuvers while trying to flee and collided with a coast guard boat, causing several passengers to fall into the sea.

Authorities said at least 14 people died in the incident.

Fourteen other migrants were detained, while seven were rescued by coast guard teams.

Officials said the remaining passengers were brought to shore and some received medical assistance.

Local authorities said an investigation has been launched into the incident.
