Iranian police have detained 755 Afghan migrants in the central province of Yazd over the past week for lacking legal residency documents, a senior local police official said.

Ahmad Negahban, Yazd’s police chief, said the Afghans were arrested while travelling in urban and rural areas and have been transferred to a temporary holding camp for deportation.

He said three cars and eight motorcycles were also confiscated during the operations.

Iran has recently intensified arrests and deportations of Afghans, a trend that accelerated after its 12-day conflict with Israel earlier this year. Authorities now expel an average of around 300 Afghans per day, according to local officials.

Earlier on Monday, a security official in Iran’s Khorasan Razavi province said 1.8 million Afghans had been deported through the Dogharoon border crossing so far this year, including migrants originating from 11 other provinces. He said deportations surged during the conflict but have since “stabilised and significantly decreased.”
