Afghanistan’s U-17 futsal team clinched a historic victory over regional powerhouse Iran, winning 2–1 in the final of the 2025 Asian Youth Championship on Thursday night in Bahrain.
Despite Iran dominating possession with 54% of the ball and registering 17 shots, the Afghan side made the most of their chances. With 7 shots on target from 12 attempts, strong goalkeeping and clinical finishing gave Afghanistan the edge. The lone goal of the match proved decisive, earning the country its first-ever gold medal in the U-17 Asian futsal competition.
Afghanistan’s goalkeeper made five crucial saves, keeping a clean sheet despite mounting pressure from Iran’s attack. Iran had more corners and fewer fouls, but they could not break down the disciplined Afghan defense.
Victory sparks online celebrations
The match drew tens of thousands of online viewers, with Afghan fans erupting in joy across livestream platforms and social media. Viewers flooded comment sections with congratulatory messages, jokes, and expressions of national pride.
Afghanistan entered the final after a dominant 9–1 win over Thailand in the semifinals, while Iran had trounced Uzbekistan 14–2. The final was a far more balanced contest, with both sides playing high-intensity futsal.
Afghanistan’s win capped an impressive tournament run where they scored 30 goals and conceded only four — slightly better defensively than Iran, who scored 36 goals but let in six.
The victory not only highlights Afghanistan’s growing talent in the sport but also offers a rare moment of national unity and pride amid political and economic challenges back home.
