A husband and wife in the eastern province of Khost died by suicide due to what local sources described as severe economic hardship.

The incident occurred Tuesday in a village in Ismail Khil and Mandozai district, the sources said. Residents reported the family had been struggling for some time to meet daily needs, with a lack of job opportunities and low income leaving them in worsening financial distress.

This was the third suicide in Khost in the past two days. Earlier, a young man fatally shot himself in Alisher district, and another young man died by hanging himself from the ceiling of a house.

According to figures compiled by Amu from local sources, these deaths bring to nine the number of people who have died by suicide in Khost in less than two weeks. Of those, five were teenagers, one was a young man and one was a teenage girl.

Sources cited economic problems, hopelessness about an uncertain future, and lack of employment opportunities for young people as the main causes of the recent suicides.

They added that Taliban authorities in some southern and eastern provinces have imposed strict limits on posting images of suicide victims on social media and on media coverage of such incidents.
