The UN in Afghanistan on Friday confirmed the death of Freshta Emady, a female staff member of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), expressing condolences to her family and colleagues.

In a statement posted on X, the UN mission said it was mourning the loss of Emady, whom it described as a valued member of the UNFPA family.

“She will be greatly missed,” the statement said. “We extend our heartfelt condolences and kindly ask that her loved ones’ privacy be respected during this time.”

The United Nations did not provide details about the circumstances of her death.

However, reports circulating on social media and among local sources have linked Emady’s death to a recent security-related incident in Afghanistan. Those reports could not be independently verified, and UN officials have not publicly commented on them.

UNFPA, the UN agency responsible for sexual and reproductive health programs, operates across Afghanistan, providing health and protection services, particularly for women and girls.
