The 10th edition of Afghanistan’s Shpageeza Cricket League began Saturday morning at the Kabul International Cricket Stadium, marking the return of one of the country’s most prominent sporting events.
Launched in 2013, the Shpageeza League has evolved into a cornerstone of Afghanistan’s domestic cricket calendar, offering a rare public spectacle in a nation where large-scale entertainment remains limited. The competition features Twenty20 matches and has been a springboard for emerging local talent over the past decade.
This year’s edition includes five franchises: the Mis-e Ainak Knights, Boost Defenders, Band-e Amir Dragons, Amo Sharks, and Speen Ghar Tigers. Matches are scheduled to take place exclusively in Kabul.
Several of Afghanistan’s best-known cricketers are leading their teams. Rashid Khan, the country’s celebrated international spinner, is captaining the Speen Ghar Tigers. His squad includes Hazratullah Zazai, Rahmat Shah, and Ikram Alikhil.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz leads the Mis-e Ainak Knights, joined by veteran players Mohammad Nabi, Mujeeb ur Rahman, and Afsar Zazai.
The Boost Defenders are captained by Ibrahim Zadran, with teammates including Noor Ahmad, Karim Janat, and Tariq Stanikzai.
Afghanistan’s Test captain, Hashmatullah Shahidi, is at the helm of the Band-e Amir Dragons. His roster features Mohammad Shahzad, Nijat Masood, and Gulbadin Naib.
Azmatullah Omarzai leads the Amo Sharks, which field players such as Fazal Haq Farooqi, Qais Ahmad, and Sharafuddin Ashraf.
