KABUL — Ahead of International Women’s Day on March 8, U.N.-Habitat Afghanistan has reiterated its solidarity with Afghan women and girls, emphasizing their rights, participation, and empowerment.
In a statement on X, the agency highlighted its commitment to supporting Afghan women, who continue to face severe restrictions under Taliban rule.
Stephanie Luss, U.N.-Habitat’s representative in Afghanistan, said in a video message that access to education, healthcare, and clean drinking water has a profound impact on the lives of Afghan women and girls.
This year’s International Women’s Day comes as women remain barred from basic rights, more than three years after the Taliban’s return to power. Women’s rights activists say conditions have deteriorated to the point where “even breathing” has become difficult under Taliban-imposed restrictions.
Despite mounting international pressure, the Taliban continue to enforce sweeping bans and limitations on women’s rights, showing no signs of easing their policies.
