Iran executes Afghan citizen amid rising number of death sentences

TEHRAN — Iranian authorities executed an Afghan national in Shiraz’s Adel Abad prison on Wednesday, according to Hengaw Human Rights Organization.

The individual, identified as Katib Sayednian, was convicted of murder, the rights group reported.

This execution is part of what the watchdog describes as an alarming increase in the execution of Afghan nationals in Iran. So far this year, 71 Afghan citizens have been executed on various charges, Hengaw said, marking a significant rise compared to previous years.

The rights group criticized the Iranian government for a lack of transparency and accountability in these cases, highlighting concerns about Afghan defendants’ limited access to legal representation.

The surge in executions has drawn sharp criticism from human rights organizations, which have repeatedly called for Iran to ensure fair trials and proper legal protections for all individuals, including foreign nationals.
