As public punishments continue by the Taliban, a woman was lashed in public in Pashtun Kot district of the northern province of Faryab on Sunday, according to a statement from Taliban’s supreme court.

The statement, which was released Monday, said that the woman was accused of “running away from home.”

The woman received 39 lashes and was sentenced to one year in prison, according to the statement.

Local Taliban officials and local residents attended the event in which the woman was punished, said the statement.

Over the past two months, the Taliban have flogged 154 individuals, including 23 women, across several provinces, according to data compiled by Amu.

Human rights organizations have criticized the Taliban’s actions as a blatant violation of human dignity and international human rights norms.

Advocacy groups have warned of the psychological and social consequences of public corporal punishments, particularly for victims and their communities. They have called on the international community to exert greater pressure on the Taliban to cease these practices and uphold human rights in Afghanistan.
